The Golden Galleon, Aldeburgh

The Golden Galleon really is a first class chippy,  join the queue and soak up the atmosphere as you slowly meander your way to the counter to order something tasty. It's well worth the wait and you will not be disappointed.

However if your legs are tired after a day on the beach and serious mooching round the bookshops, charity and gift shops, delis, cafes, Jack Wills & Joules etc then make your way up the stairs to the "Upper Deck". Here you will be able to enjoy the same fine fayre in a cosy upstairs restaurant courtesy of friendly and helpful staff.

Harry Haddock says "It's great, The Golden Galleon deserves a golden medal!"

Fryz Formula for Success

Fryz Fish & Chips, Bretton, Peterborough is owned and run by husband and wife team Robert and Caroline Brownlee. Their bright, contemporary and welcoming decor is backed up by a range of awards that mean you are guaranteed a quality serving of fish & chips every time. They were recently recognised by The Times as one of the 10 best places to eat chips in Britiain, they were regional winners in the British Potato Council’s Perfect Portion Awards 2010 and they hold the prestigious Seafish Fish Friers Quality Award. In addition they have earned the impressive maximum five stars in the Peterborough City Council's "Scores on the Doors" food hygiene rating scheme.
So with so much going for it, what is their secret to success? "We use locally sourced spuds, we think that the best spuds in the country are grown in the fields of Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire" says proud owner Robert Brownlee. "We also have self-imposed and visible sustainability targets in the shop and use a scientific approach to all processes and staff training". Which is not too surprising when you learn that Rob has a PhD in Applied Mathematics.

Harry Haddock says: "It all adds up to a winning formula - If you want quality Fish & Chips then Fryz has to be the answer".

Amazing Offer Fosters Massive Interest in Fish & Chips

Fosters Fish & Chips, Didsbury, Manchester is already a popular local fish & chip shop but this week they rocked the world of takeaway food, and got the whole nation talking. This sister shop to the original Fosters, Alderley Edge, decided to celebrate their first birthday with an incredible offer: fish & chips for £1. Customers (and one giant golden cod) were happy to queue for hours to make sure they didn't miss out on this amazing offer.

More information available courtesy of the Mail Online here: "Sign of the times?"

Harry Haddock says:  "It just goes to show you that a little bit of creativity, hard work and a fish costume can still capture the nation's imagination - well done to the team at Fosters!"

Fish & Chips in the Far East (Lowestoft)

Having recently recorded Britain's most northerly chippy there is now much excitement and discussion going on down at Plaicebook HQ as we are trying to decide which one of two possible contenders is Britain's most easterly Fish & Chip shop. We know it must be in Lowestoft as this is the furthest east you can get in the UK. However there are 2 chippys that appear to be on almost the same longitude. The two contenders are Perry's of Suffolk Road and Pip's of Queen's Road.

We really need some more accurate information to confirm our findings, perhaps a friendly local with a hand held GPS or SAT NAV could help. There is not a lot in it, but the question remains has Pip's pipped Perry's or has Perry's pipped Pips? Can you help?....contact james@plaicebook.co.uk

Fisherman's Market & Grill, Idaho

The Fisherman's Market & Grill in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho is the place for fresh fish, fish & chips, sushi, snacks, salads, tacos, sandwiches ("fishwiches") and more.

When choosing Fish & Chips, traditional battered cod is available. However you might be a little more adventurous and try one of the many delicious alternatives including Mahi Mahi, Salmon, Catfish, Oysters, Razor Clams and Alaskan Halibut.

Fish & Chips comes with a choice of "One Coleslaw, Two Tartars & French Fries" and we think that the Fisherman's Market & Grill is probably worth a visit just for the  classy coleslaw (peanut-coconut, honey poppyseed & cilantro-lime) and eight
tantalising tartar choices, including "Rasta", "Bombay", "Sicilian" and "Tokyo".

If you want even more variety then you might try something from the sushi menu. There is an excellent choice including Nigiri, Norimaki and Makizushi rolls, assortments, sides, salads and soups.
Harry Haddock says: "The Fisherman's Market & Grill is a must for anyone serious about Fish & Chips and for anyone who fancies an adventure into a wide world of tasty choices and fresh fishy flavours".

Frankie's Fish & Chips, Brae, Shetland

Frankie's in the snow
Frankie's Fish & Chips in Brae, Shetland may be a long way from the mainland but we believe it is well worth a trip for a number of great reasons. Not only is this the most Northerly fish & chip shop in the British Isles but it is also very well regarded. Frankie's has recently featured in The Independent's guide to the 50 Best Fish & Chip Shops and earlier this year it was chosen as a finalist and runner-up in the much coveted Seafish 2011 National Fish & Chip awards.

With an emphasis on a great choice of "local and sustainable seafood" their takeaway and cafe menus include mouthwatering locally caught battered haddock as well as many other tasty treats including local blueshell mussels, haggis, black and white pudding, home-made soup and daily specials. They even offer Gluten Free options on most meals seven days a week.

Owner Valerie & Manager John visiting another friendly frier
The other secret ingredient that we know makes a difference at this and many other great fish & chip shops across the UK and beyond has to be the dedication of its owner and staff.

Harry Haddock says: "a superb and unique chippy with beautiful views and excellent food. A must for any serious fish & chipaholic".

Dojos Diner, Baghdad

Dojo's Diner is the place to be in Baghdad.  Good food, good friends and good fun. Venue of first choice for the international community.  The Fish and Chips are excellent - in fact the best in Baghdad!  Enough to make any Brit miss home. Service is superb with Ingo and Gaynelle making the perfect hosts.

Dojo's is an oasis of style amongst the chaos.  Rockets and Mortars optional.

Harry Haddock says:
"It is a pleasure to feature this unusal but popular Diner. We would like to remind all readers of Plaicebook that whatever your nationality, political and/or religious persuasion the one thing that unites us as human beings is our need for good food and good company. So next time you are in Baghdad pop in to Dojos Diner, ask for Fish & Chips and remember to give peas a chance."

Fish Tram Chips, Llandudno

(CC) Image "Llandudno Fish tram Chips" courtesy of Natalie Rose

"Fish Tram Chips" is an award winning chippy in Llandudno, located directly opposite the tram, with a fantastic view up the hill towards the Great Orme. It has a traditional takeaway and a licensed restaurant. Although you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to dining and great views in and around Llandudno, we think that sitting in the Fish Tram Chips, or outside (weather  permitting), munching on a plate of their finest fishy fodder, watching the world and the trams go by has to make this establishment a strong contender for one of the Seven Wonderful Chippys of the World.

Harry Haddock says: "The tram can wait but this is a Fish & Chip shop not to be missed..."

Thanks to Rhian Roberts (@Rhiroberts) for recommending this popular and well regarded Fish & Chip shop. Rhian says "Visit Llandudno for 'Fish Tram Chips' (by the tram surprisingly) Steve the boss is tip top. I have a glass of rose with mine".

Dave's Diner

Dave's Diner in East Looe is a true fishnchipaholic's delight. On the Quay in East Looe it is perfectly placed (ED: Plaiced!?) to enjoy a portion of your favourite fried delicacy. As well as offering a takeaway or restaurant choice there is "Prime fillet of cod" and even a local special of "Hot Cornish Pasty & a Mug of Tea" on the menu, so there are plenty of options for all tastes.

Established in 1950 this quirky, but charming chippy deserves a visit, if only to marvel at the colourful signs. The fisherman arm in arm with his fishy friend is a favourite (is that Dave with the Sowester & the beard?) as well as the sign reassuring all potential customers that they serve "Real, Fresh Chips - Guaranteed".

So, next time you're anywhere near Looe pop along to the Quay and check out this Aladdin's cave of Fish & Chippy goodness.

Dick Barton's Fish & Chips, Swansea

Thanks to Marc Webber ( @marcwebber ) for nominating Dick Barton's Fish and Chip Shop in West Cross, Swansea. We are so impressed we've made them the "Plaicebook Chippy of the Week". Marc says that Dick Barton's "made me the man I am, I've been going there since I was a kid and, 20-odd years later they are still serving up the best Fish and Chips Swansea Bay has to offer. The chips are chunky, fresh and have a fantastic crunchiness to them. The curry sauce and chips is to die for and the staff are always friendly".

Harry Haddock says: A great looking chippy full of character, serving excellent Fish & Chips. The location and view over Swansea Bay is hard to beat. Dick Barton was a fictional crime fighter (BBC Radio 1948-1951) who solved crimes and saved the nation from disaster. We think Dick Barton's Fish & Chip shop is carrying on this tradition by providing an exciting and entertaining takeaway & restaurant and saving the nation from hunger time and time again. Hope to see you there sometime soon!

"The Plaice" is the Place to be!

The Plaice in Harestock, near Winchester, is an award winning chippy and having sampled its wares Harry Haddock is happy to confirm that it definitely deserves its award winning status. We purchased our fish & chips on a busy Friday but still found the service to be quick & friendly. The fish had a mouth watering crispy golden batter and the ample portion of chips were almost as golden. They were perfect chips and tasted as if they were made from luxury spuds!

However the best was yet to come - for the first time I got to sample an unusual Southern delicacy; the "Pea Fritter". This is a ball of Mushy peas in a light batter, an unusual but tasty way of getting one of your five a day and highly recommended. This may have been my first pea fritter, but it will not be my last!

The Plaice may be a little off the beaten track but Harry Haddock says "it's our chippy of the week and if you are ever anywhere near Winchester it is well worth tracking down".

The Bay in Stonehaven is a popular fish & chip shop that is leading the way to guarantee future generations can continue to enjoy their great tasting fish & chips. It's been open for 5 years and is owned by Calum and Lindsay Richardson who have a combined experience of over 30 years in the trade. Both Calum and Lindsay have previously won the young fish frier of the year award (Calum in 2002-2004 & Lindsay in 2006-2007). Brit & Chips

Brit & Chips is located in the Heart of Old Montreal, it’s goal is to capture the best aspects of a traditional chippy and add some of the local flavour and style that Montreal, and Old Montreal specifically, are known for. The menu was created by Some of Montreal’s pre-eminent experts in English Cuisine after a tireless trek through England, hunting down different recipes and ideas from the most renowned English Fish n’ Chips shops. The result is an amazing amalgamation of the best that Britain has to offer with a little Quebecois spice.
Plaicebook says: "This classy looking Fish & Chip shop offers the best of all worlds - fantastic fish & chips in great surroundings. If you have any room left then why not try a traditional 99 ice-cream with a flake? - perfect!"
